"Lost in the Shuffle. Unfortunately, we had a fire in our loft appartment over the barn. We were staying in it while we remodeled our entire house. When we contacted our agent we were quickly referred to a claims specialist. Getting in touch with this person was about as cryptic as communication could be. You call, leave a msg, they text you and email me and tell you they will be contacting “soon” and yet no definitive time or date. In the beginning they were quick to respond and released money to get us in a hotel quickly. Then, the communciations came to a slow and eventually non existent state. When no response was heard, i called the agent who quickly flopped me back to the claims department that sent me through a 38 minute chase to get to another claims agent who was not available so i had to leave a message. Once this uniformed soul got back to me days later i still had no answer as his answer was told speak with claims agent who I could not get hold of to start. With no support understanding the policy and how the folks working to demo and mitigate the space it lead to poor decisions leading to excessive charges allowed by the mitigation group. They will rack your tab faster than you can react. What you don’t know will hurt you. The mitigation fees come out of your rebuild coverage. This left me short on funds to rebuild and we came out of pocket. As well, we had no policy reciew in the years prior so we got caught with too little coverage after the most recent insane escalation of construction costs. My advice. 1. Learn the secret ways of insurance game. 2. Get your house appraised and get a price to reconstruct. 3. Video or photo all your stuff. Build a spread sheet. Document all. Because if you don’t you aren’t getting your reimbursement. Even if you pay for an excessive amount. 4. Keep your personal property within reason of replacement cost as they overall it. 5. Have reserves in place while you navigate the process."
